ASC 830-20-35-3 and long-term intercompany advances
ASC 830-20-35-3 contains exceptions to the usual income-statement treatment of foreign-currency transaction gains and losses. Its long-term-investment provision concerns qualifying intra-entity balances for which settlement is not planned or anticipated in the foreseeable future. The reporting level matters: an intercompany label alone does not establish the accounting treatment.
The short answer
The long-term-investment provision is ASC 830-20-35-3(b). It concerns qualifying foreign-currency transactions between entities consolidated, combined or accounted for by the equity method in the reporting entity’s statements. Relevant gains or losses are treated with translation adjustments in other comprehensive income. This is not an automatic rule for every long-dated loan or for a subsidiary’s standalone accounts.
Keep transaction gains and translation adjustments distinct
| Term | Meaning in this discussion |
|---|---|
| FX gain / loss | Foreign-currency transaction effect |
| OCI | Other comprehensive income |
| CTA | Cumulative translation adjustment |
| Functional currency | Currency of the entity’s primary economic environment |

A fictional €1 million advance
Assume a US subsidiary with a USD functional currency owes its parent €1,000,000. Fictional exchange rates move from $1.08 to $1.10 per euro. The USD value of the payable rises from $1,080,000 to $1,100,000: a $20,000 unfavorable currency movement for the subsidiary.
If the balance qualifies under the relevant long-term-investment provision, the treatment must be examined in statements including the entities at the specified reporting level. Do not simply change the standalone subsidiary’s income-statement entry to OCI. The example illustrates the movement, not a conclusion on a real advance.
Document why settlement is not foreseen
A short description such as “permanent financing” should be supported by evidence. The preparer records the facts; the accounting professional decides whether the criteria apply and what treatment belongs in each set of statements.
- Identify both entities, the currency and the reporting statements.
- Read the loan agreement, repayment terms and actual cash-flow intentions.
- Document whether settlement is planned or anticipated, not merely whether the loan is old.
- Reconsider the conclusion when repayment plans or circumstances change.
A group’s framework needs a separate review
IAS 21 has a related net-investment concept for monetary items, with distinctions between separate and consolidated statements. The existence of a similar IFRS concept does not establish that every US GAAP conclusion transfers unchanged. A French group’s reporting may also use French consolidation rules.
Check the current authoritative framework for the statements being prepared. The FASB document linked here reproduces the relevant long-term-investment reference; it does not replace reviewing the current Codification in a real case.
Keep the qualification with the intercompany review
Close Review organizes intercompany balances and supporting work. Retain the counterparty confirmation, exchange-rate evidence, agreement and qualification memo together. The professional determines the nature of the advance and the accounting conclusion; the file makes that decision understandable to the next reviewer.
Common questions
Does a long repayment term automatically qualify?
No. The analysis concerns whether settlement is planned or anticipated and the relevant reporting conditions, not just the stated maturity.
Can the standalone subsidiary use OCI automatically?
No. Distinguish the reporting level and applicable guidance. The exception must not be generalized from consolidated statements to every standalone statement.
Does TAXFINAI determine the nature of the advance?
The professional makes that judgment. The review file helps retain the facts, support and explanation of the decision.
